  • With a little more than three months remaining until the 2021 Kentucky Derby, bettors have a good idea of who the fastest 3-year-olds on the Derby Trail are.The next step for these swift sophomores is to prove they can carry their speed over more demanding distances.
  • The Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks pools each consist of 24 wagering interests that include 23 individual horses and an “all others” (or field) of interest. The “All Others” option, listed at number 24, lumps in all 3-year-old fillies and all remaining 3-year-old colts and geldings.
  • RELATED: See the prep calendar for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Since his Juvenile victory, Essential Quality has dropped to 10-1, with the Derby six months away. Jackie's Warrior remains the second choice after his fourth-place finish, but his odds have drifted to 40-1 as distance concerns begin to creep in.

Jackie's Warrior might have been the 4-5 favorite when the gates opened for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but he already had been overtaken as the early 2021 Kentucky Derby favorite before stepping on Keeneland's track.

Bill Shoemaker has also ridden the most Kentucky Derby horses (26) in history. The record low temperature at the race (held on the first week of May every year) was 47 degrees in 1935 and 1957.

The Champagne (G1) winner opened at 15-1 at William Hill's Sportsbook and held steady at that number leading up to Juvenile. Essential Quality opened at 20-1, but smart money ahead of the Juvenile cut his odds to 12-1.

Since his Juvenile victory, Essential Quality has dropped to 10-1, with the Derby six months away. Jackie's Warrior remains the second choice after his fourth-place finish, but his odds have drifted to 40-1 as distance concerns begin to creep in.

Chad Brown's Highly Motivated was among the biggest movers of the week. He captured the Nyquist Stakes on the Breeders' Cup undercard in impressive fashion and now has won two races in a row. His odds dropped to 45-1 from 125-1.

Doug O'Neill's Hot Rod Charlie almost pulled off a massive upset while running second in the Juvenile at 94-1. His Derby odds have dropped to 50-1 from 140-1 since that effort.

Essential Quality is the deserving leader in the clubhouse, but with only 12 horses listed under 100-1, this might be the time to take a swing with a lightly raced long shot that has upside.

Kentucky Derby Betting Rankings

VegasInsider.com Horse Racing expert Anthony Stabile provides his 'Stabile's Seven' rankings throughout the Kentucky Derby prep trail.

Stabile's Seven - Power Rankings

  1. Essential Quality
  2. Risk Taking
  3. Life is Good
  4. Greatest Honour
  5. Mandaloun
  6. Rombauer
  7. Collaborate

(Updated 3.10.21)

The Stabile Seven Rankings are your source for anything and everything leading up to Kentucky Derby 147 on Saturday May 1 at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

In the coming weeks, Stabile, best known for picking 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide at odds of over 12/1, will break down the top contenders for this years’ Run for the Roses on VegasInsider.com, culminating on Friday, April 30 with an extensive analysis of every runner that steps into the gate for the most exciting two minutes in sports.

Stabile's Seven Betting Analysis

(Number of points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard)

1) Essential Quality (40)

  • Trainer: Brad Cox
  • Jockey: Luis Saez

Well, it’s official: we will see him next on the Blue Grass on 4/3 at Keeneland, his final prep before the Derby. It makes perfect sense since he has won twice over the course and the victories just so happened to come in a pair of G1 races, the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He’ll do the bulk of his training for Cox at his winter base, the Fair Grounds.

2) Risk Taking (10)

  • Trainer: Chad Brown
  • Jockey: Eric Cancel

I actually dipped my toe in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager with him last week, getting 42-1. He’s going to have to get faster based on a handful of performances we’ve seen the past two weeks. But I don’t think they write races long enough for him. Two for two since adding blinkers and stretching out to two turns, he’s had a couple of easy half-mile drills since the win in the Withers on 2/6 at Aqueduct and the more serious work in preparation for the 4/3 Wood Memorial at the Big A should begin next week. Brown and Klaravich have put together a nice little squad to attack the Derby this year, as Crowded Trade ran a bang-up second in his second start and Highly Motivated was a troubled trip third in his return to action in the Gotham last week. Highly Motivated goes to Blue Grass while Crowded Trade runs in Wood as well.

3) Life is Good (60)

  • Trainer: Bob Baffert
  • Jockey: Mike Smith

Another California prep for the Derby, another romp by a Baffert runner. 107 Beyer Speed Figure towers over his rivals at this point. In fact, two of his three figures crush them. I have two major issues with him. First, he’s never been headed. Now, one could say that’s not an issue but more of him dominating but I’ll offer up that we just don’t know how he’ll react when tested. Secondly, he does some weird things in the stretch. He idled severely in the Sham then drifted to middle of the course in the San Felipe last weekend Smith said he reacted to the infield monitor. Have you seen the size of the one at Churchill? If that is truly the case he still has a bunch of work to do mentally. I’m not completely sold, especially if they continue trying to get him to slow down and rate. Santa Anita Derby on 4/3 at the Great Race Place is next.

4) Greatest Honour (60)

  • Trainer: Shug McGaughey
  • Jockey: Jose Ortiz

It certainly seems like he and Risk Taking are in the same boat at this point. They’ve both thrived when stretching out but need to get faster. He’s made up a good deal of ground in three consecutive starts over the first-finish line course at Gulfstream, a feat in itself. Tapit has sired three of the last seven Belmont Stakes winners and his dam is a half to Jazil and Rags to Riches, back-to-back Belmont winners. That’s a long way of saying this horse is bred to run in a marathon. But he has to get faster. It will be curious to see how the field shapes up for the 3/27 Florida Derby. If one or two of the recent maiden winners show up, he could face a real test.

5) Mandaloun (52)

  • Trainer: Brad Cox
  • Jockey: Florent Geroux

He’s less than two weeks away from his final prep, the 1 3/16 miles Louisiana Derby on 3/20 at the Fair Grounds and Cox is starting to turn the screws, as evident by the :59 1/5, five-furlong drill on 3/6. Looks like he’ll face Proxy and Midnight Bourbon, familiar foes as these three made up the trifecta in different order in both the Lecomte and Risen Star this winter at the New Orleans oval. When you add in Caddo River, one of the favorites for the Rebel at Oaklawn this weekend, you’ll see that Cox is loaded for bear with his sophomores this season.

6) Rombauer (14)

  • Trainer: Mike McCarthy
  • Jockey: TBD

The other horse I bet on in the Future Wager last weekend, he closed at over 109-1. He’s been training steadily for his return to dirt in the Santa Anita Derby where he’ll need at least second place finish to get into the Derby starting gate.

7) Collaborate (0)

  • Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr.
  • Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione

If this guy had a theme song leading up to the Derby it would have to be Lose Yourself by Eminem because he’ll only get one shot to get enough points for the First Saturday in May. And the problem is these preps all seemingly have imposing obstacles. When all is said and done, I wonder if he ends up running in Wood or at Oaklawn for the Arkansas Derby.

History of the Kentucky Derby Race

Capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival, the race is also known as 'the most exciting two minutes in sports'.

Popularly called the Run for the Roses because of the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner, the first Derby took place in 1875. Since then, it has been held annually in Louisville, Kentucky without interruption-- not even during the Great Depression and both World Wars.

The Kentucky Derby is usually the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes. This year, however, Belmont is up first due to the new race season schedule.

Now, if a horse manages to win all three races, it’s the winner of the Triple Crown. However, only 13 horses have been able to do it so far.

The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018, who was the favorite for winning the Kentucky Derby right from the start. In the 2019 Derby, even though Maximum Security was the first one to cross the finish line, he was disqualified for interference, and Country House was declared the winner of the 145th edition of the Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Winners (Last 10)

2020 - Authentic
2019 - Country House
2018 - Justify
2017 - Always Dreaming
2016 - Nyquist
2015 - American Pharoah
2014 - California Chrome

A Few Words about Kentucky Derby Online Betting

When it comes to the 2021 Kentucky Derby, it could be any horse’s race. Make sure to check the odds on one of the websites we’ve recommended you above and keep an eye on them.

Kentucky Derby online betting is a much-beloved tradition for many people, and therefore all these online betting operators try their best to provide users with an excellent betting experience.

Many of these operators even offer the possibility of live streaming so you can watch the race from the comfort of one device. However, in order to watch the Kentucky Derby online, you need to register with an operator of your choice.

The majority of Kentucky Derby online betting operators have adopted the “bet and watch” concept. Basically, you need to have placed a bet in the past 24 hours in order to watch a race’s livestream.

There’s nothing more exciting than watching a live stream of your favorite Kentucky Derby contenders and rooting for them to achieve Triple Crown glory. Without a doubt, the Kentucky Derby is one of the most important events in the American sporting calendar.

Whether you decide to watch the race directly from the racecourse, from the Kentucky Derby online betting mobile application or on the operator’s official website, exciting action is guaranteed. In order to be fully prepared to make bets, bettors look at the odds months in advance.

How to Bet on Kentucky Derby Lines

After going through some of the currently available predictions and analyzing the horses’ forms and past performances, the next logical step when it comes to Kentucky Derby online betting is to actually place a bet. In our guide, we’ll go through some of the basic steps that you usually need to follow when it comes to betting with different online bookmakers.

First of all, you need to visit an online sportsbook offering the possibility to bet on the Kentucky Derby. We have included a list of such operators at the beginning of our article. Feel free to take a look at them and choose the one that suits your style of betting.

Once you visit one of the websites, you’ll need to register in order to access the operator’s services. Keep in mind that the vast majority of these online sportsbooks offer certain welcome promotions for all new users who register for the very first time.

Importantly, don’t forget to go through the operator’s terms and conditions and see what requirements must be met in order to get the available bonus.

As soon as you register, you gain access to the available betting markets. Let’s go through some of the most popular Kentucky Derby online betting options and see what the possible choices are:

Different Types of Kentucky Derby Online Betting

After signing in to your online sportsbook account, you’ll need to select the track of the race of your choice, then pick one or more races you'd like to bet on. Next, select your runner and wager type. Finally, all you have to do is enter the amount you’d like to wager and submit your bet slip.

Before you start placing your first bets, we want to make sure that you are well aware of all the betting options available when it comes to Kentucky Derby online betting.

Therefore, let’s take a quick look at some of the popular types of bets:

Early betting

Kentucky Derby future wagering is a great option for all those who enjoy early betting. This type of bet is usually available during different runnings of the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” prep races.

Win, Place & Show Bets

Win, place and show bets are types of wagers that new players usually stick to. Just like the name suggests, a win bet is a bet placed on the horse that you hope to win the Kentucky Derby.

With place bets, you can get a return if your selection finishes first, second, or sometimes even fourth or fifth depending on the bookie’s offer. It goes without saying that the odds are much lower, but this type of bet is more reassuring.

Show bet is the next in line. It’s quite simple - you win if your selection finishes in the top three. As you probably imagine, this bet comes with lower risk, but also a lower payoff.

Of course, it’s up to you to decide which one of these options is the best for you. There are also some other, maybe slightly more complicated types of wagers. But once you get familiar with them, you’ll see that they can be easily understood. So, let’s get started!

Exacta Bet

If you’ve already tried some of the previous types of bets and you’d like to try something new when it comes to Kentucky Derby online betting, exacta is the next one on our list we’d like to discuss.

In this type of bet, you have to choose two runners who you’ll think will finish first and second, but in exact order. That’s what makes this type of bet more complicated compared to those we discussed earlier. Of course, bigger risk means bigger potential payouts.

Trifecta Bet

Another type of bet that you can try is trifecta bet. It’s similar to an exacta, but just like the name suggests, this type of wager involves three horses. Choose three runners you think will finish in the top three, in the exact order, and wait for the outcome of the race.

If the “exact order” part of the bet is what bothers you, there’s another option called a boxed trifecta wager. With this modified trifecta bet, you also have to choose three horses, but the order is not important.

When it comes to odds, it won’t hurt to know how they are calculated. They are determined by a Pari-Mutuel System. In other words, the odds are dependent on the peoples’ wagers.

Once the specific amount bet on a horse is determined, that amount is compared to how much is bet on the other horses in the field and the bookies determine the odds. That’s why odds constantly change, and why the more money is bet on a particular horse, the lower odds he’ll get.
